Tips For Deworming Your Horse

FACT Horses get worms and they need to be dewormed. If not treated, the worms build up and eventually rob the horse of nutrients and energy. Worms in large numbers can damage the blood vessels and intestines of the horse.

SYMPTONS include: dull coat, pot belly, lack of energy, persistent winter coat and bouts of colic.

PROBLEM Control management of equine parasites has been performed in a similar way for years. Research is showing that the worms are building up resistance to the current deworming products. Parasite Management is an area that needs to be reviewed otherwise the money you spend on deworming may be ineffective.

METHODS include tubes administered by a vet, oral tube pastes and pellets either daily or 8 weekly.

Worming a horse can be messy and not all the dose gets in. Many people hesitate to deworm, as their horse hates taking the dose and tend to throw their head around with pastes. They try to dislodge it. With pellets, they may not eat their feed and waste the worm pellets.

Here is a product that is used to administer the dose each time you need to worm, safely and easily. Makes worming very simple, no fuss by the horse.

TIPS FOR DEWORMING

7 Tips for Good Parasite Management

Tip 1 - Use different active ingredients at different times of the year depending on the worm cycles.

Tip 2 - Main reason for rotation of the dewormer active ingredient is resistence (specifically for strongyles). These have shown to develop resistance with most benzimdazoles products.

Tip 3 - Use a Wormabit to make the process of administering easily and a full dose is given, ensuring maximum benefit.

Tip 4 - Remove manure from yard and place in separate area that horse does not have access too. This reduces potential to re-infect.

Tip 5 - Spread manure around paddock with chain harrow when HOT weather. Exposure to sun helps kill the eggs.

Tip 6 - Consider a fast rotation plan using a different active ingredient each time. Or consider a slow rotation plan where one dewormer is used each year but the dewormer changes each year.

Tip 7 - Using a daily dewormer like Stongid C only - DOES NOT KILL BOTS.
