Secret in Natural Oils

The secret is in the unrefined natural oils that contain specific nutrients to feed the hoof or horn where it is needed and allow the repair work of antioxidants to penetrate deep under the surface. Donnybrook Products have taken the knowledge and developed a product range to help protect yours horses hoof.

The oils small molecular structure allows the absorption through the skin to be an easy process (metabolises rapidly). The end result is a smooth soft texture. Some oils make an ideal lotion to apply to rough, dry hooves. The oil is so good that it is the best oil to use on your own skin and nails, but here we apply it to the hoof.

It softens and protects against damage, promotes healing and gives the hoof a healthier, youthful look. The oils are absorbed through the exterior of the hoof into the live under layer of connective tissue and cartilage. It limits the damage caused by excessive sun exposure as it keeps the keratin supple and the connective tissue underneath strong. The oils aid in the removal of the outer layer of dead cells of keratin leaving the underneath smooth and supple with a more evenly texture and a healthy ‘shine’ in appearance.

Raw oils has a range of antioxidants that have not been depleted through processing. These antioxidants fight off the free radical chain reaction that causes aging. It assists in replacing essential nutrients to the body to assist in fighting of the degradation by exposure to the elements.

The oils have antiseptic fatty acids that assist in preventing any fungal and bacterial infections. Where there are cracks in the wall of the hoof, the defences of the hoof have broken down and can result in infections entering. The natural oils that are produced by the horse in the hoof, softens and lubricates, preventing drying and cracking. As hooves are exposed to a range of harsh conditions the drying out happens faster than any other part of the body.

Most plant oils don't turn rancid easily. Each specific oil group has a range of antioxidants and nutrients. Therefore selecting the right blend of oils is crucial in the making of Donnybrook products as they are designed to do specific actions.

Many oils especially animal, turn rancid as they start to oxidise when extracted. Most manufacturers add preservatives to inhibit the process. This assists in destroying the antioxidants in the oil.

Some plant oils in particular are 50% Lauric Acid (other excellent source is mother’s milk). Lauric Acid assists to destroy lipid coated viruses such as HIV, herpes, pathogenic bacteria etc.

The purer the oil, the better the smell of the particular plant base the oil came from.

Some oils such as Eucalyptus oil is extensively used in aromatherapy, it helps to do many things but specifically in relation to applying to the hoof, it is valuable in fighting inflammation, sore muscles, and rheumatism and boosts the healing ability for wounds or abscesses. It has a sharp fresh distinctive smell, pale yellow in colour and watery in viscosity.

Eucalyptus oil comes from the euc. tree of which there are over 500 species. The Australian Aborigine calls the oil ‘kino’ and used the leaves to cover serious wounds. It is made through an aqueous distillation of fresh leaves.

The therapeutic properties include analgesic, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antiviral, anti-rheumatic and astringent are to name a few.

The oil mixes well with many other oils and base creams. The oil can also assist in causing the healing process of slow healing wound to improve dramatically, also ulcers and abscesses.

In addition to many other benefits, for the hoof it assists muscular aches and pains and excellent in hoof care. The oil is effective against bacteria especially staphylococci.

Other oils have a nourishing and protective effect. These are preferred oils in the cosmetic treatment of damaged or stressed tissues. Science is establishing that it possesses regenerative and reconstructing qualities. They allow for enhanced control over skin moisturisation as it helps keep the normal structure to body surfaces such as skin and hoof (keratin). This occurs by sustaining the normal structure of the epithelium cells and the nerve cells via the supply membrane. This oil in particular is a light thin oil and is high in linoleic acid and rich in phenols.

Other oils such as Lavender Oil is made through steam distillation using only the flowers of the plant. It has a clear oil with a sweet floral scent. Used mainly in aromatherapy to calm and for its restorative properties, such as for reducing dryness and as an anti-inflammatory. It has a moisturizing effect and leaves a healthy ’shine’ to the surface.

Some are very common oils, used in cooking, cosmetics, soaps and pharmaceuticals. In cosmetics, they are used to moisturise and nourish the skin and hair. Many were used by the ancient Greeks to bath in as they soften and moisturise the skin.

It is common practice by older Italians to drink a shot glass of extra virgin olive oil everyday. People from the Mediterranean are well known for their healthy supple skin types.

The Extra Virgin Olive Oil contains a high level of antioxidants which can be applied to the body. It absorbs in well and is a perfect base oil to be used in a natural hoof lotion that is environmentally friendly. Other oils contain high amounts of essential Vitamin E. Tamanu Oil

Indigenous to the Melanesian and Polynesian communities. Is made from the nut kernels of the Tamanu Tree – Calophyllum inophyllum which comes from the tropical areas of South East Asia. Unique ability to promote the formation of new skin tissue, thus enhancing the healing process of wounds and the growth of healthy skin (anti-aging). Tamanu Oil speeds up the healing process by penetrating deep into the underlying connective tissues and promotes the growth of new tissue, new skin and creates a blemish free appearance. The oil has an extremely complex chemistry and science is establishing that Tamanu Oil has a significant healing ability. Possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-neuralgic, antibiotic and analgesic properties. Has been used in the 1920’s to treat leprosy and other serious skin conditions

Studies conducted by BioScience Laboratories on improving scar appearance. Aged scars where part of the trials. Significant improvements in appearance was seen after just 6 weeks, both reducing the size of the scar and the redness. Successfully used on cats, dogs and horses.

Tea Tree Oil is being used more and more in hospitals to combat Staphylococcus aureus which attacks wounds and people with depressed immune systems. The oil immediately penetrates and assists to repair areas of injury such as wounds, assesses or infections.

Has been used as an antiseptic, anti-fungal, antiviral and antibacterial applications and works well in hoof oil.

Adding too high a concentration of Tea Tree Oil in any lotion can cause irritations on the surface of the skin. It is recommended that no more than 5% of the total lotion should contain this oil.

The important thing about Donnybrook products is the selection of the oils, the base that is used to blend the oils and that the oils are not over processed therefore the value of the nutirents and antioxidants are still in the oils
