Article Review
Vitamin E is a general term used to describe a similar group of compounds that have a biological activity known as alpha tocopheral. It is a broad spectrum antioxidant which functions in cell membranes and assists in the improvement of the immune response in horses.
There are two forms
- d-alpha tocopheral acetate which derived from natural sources
and
-dl-alpha tocopheral acetate, derived from synthetic sources.
Recent studies show that natural sources of vitamin E (d-alpha tocopheral acetate) is about 3 to 4 times more effective in horses than it synthetic equivalent.
Wheat germ, stabilized rice bran and soybean oil are excellent natural sources for feed.
Grape Seed Oil, raw unrefined coconut oil and other similar oils are excellent natural sources for topical applications such as hoof moisturisers.
